Politécnico do Porto becomes Universidade Técnica do Porto

Politécnico do Porto begins a new chapter in its history with the creation of Universidade Técnica do Porto (UTP), following the publication in the Official Gazette (Diário da República) on July 17 of Decree-Law No. 145/2026, marking one of the most significant reforms of Portuguese higher education in recent decades.

This moment marks a significant milestone in the institution’s trajectory, reflecting its evolution and reinforcing its position on the national and international stage.

Among the schools that make up the new university is our own, Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP), one of the oldest and most prestigious engineering schools in the country, with 174 years of history, reinforcing our mission to train highly qualified engineers, conduct excellent research, and transfer knowledge to industry.

The strengthening of scientific activity, the growth of academic offerings, internationalization, and the close ties to the business community have helped consolidate and prepare an efficient and effective response to the current and future challenges of higher education.

For ISEP, this new reality represents an opportunity to expand its capacity to act in strategic areas of engineering, innovation, and technology, strengthening collaboration with national and international partners and promoting the development of solutions with an impact on society.

Integration into the Universidade Técnica do Porto ensures the continuity of ISEP’s identity, history, and values, maintaining its commitment to high-quality education, research oriented toward solving concrete challenges, and a strong connection to the business ecosystem.

ISEP sees this new cycle as an opportunity to continue establishing itself as a benchmark in engineering education in Portugal and Europe, actively contributing to the country’s scientific, technological, and economic development.
