Filipe Azevedo, a faculty member in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP), has published a new book entitled “High Voltage Engineering: Theory, Systems, and Practice”. Written in English, this technical and scientific publication is dedicated to the field of high-voltage engineering and is aimed at students, academics, researchers and professionals in electrical engineering.
The book combines theoretical foundations with engineering practice, covering topics such as electric fields, dielectric materials, electrical breakdown mechanisms, overhead transmission lines, insulators, power cables, transformers, switchgear, overvoltages, insulation coordination, testing, diagnostics, reliability, asset management and safety. It also stands out for its strong focus on power systems, providing context within the Portuguese electricity system while aligning with the standards of the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) and the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).
The publication features a foreword by António Machado e Moura, Emeritus Full Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, and was sponsored by RME – Comercialização de Equipamentos e Instalações Elétricas, Lda., further strengthening the connection between academic knowledge and professional engineering practice.
The book reflects Filipe Azevedo’s extensive teaching and research experience, developed over many years both as an ISEP faculty member and as a researcher at INESC TEC – Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science. His research focuses on power systems, smart grids, artificial intelligence, electricity markets, renewable energy integration and decision-support methods. The publication also draws on his teaching experience as the course coordinator of Protection and High Voltage Systems, part of ISEP’s Master’s in Electrical Engineering – Power Systems. The close relationship between the course content and the book gives the publication particular academic and educational relevance.
The book is already available for purchase through Booki, Bertrand, Wook and Quântica Editora, and is also available as an e-book. It will soon be available through Fnac and Amazon. A Portuguese-language edition is also planned for publication in the near future.
