Vertical gardening: the first vegetables
28-05-2020

ISEP's landless garden system was installed in January, with some plants. In February, the strawberries were placed, and, in March, the first lettuces were planted. After one month, the lettuces were harvested - the first production of this vertical garden.

At the moment, the system is only working with plants and vegetables as, due to current restrictions, it was not possible to install the fish.

"With this first production it is clear that, if it produced only lettuces, the system would have the capacity to produce more than 1200 lettuces per year. And we are going to get a variety of vegetables as spinach, cabbage, and pepper", says Abel Duarte, professor of the Department of Chemical Engineering (DEQ).

The system is located in the building of the Department of Chemical Engineering (DEQ), with the responsibility and coordination of professor Abel Duarte and the collaboration of nine volunteer students. The project includes two reservoirs with about two thousand liters of capacity, three flower boxes, and more than 100 positions for growing vegetables.
