19-07-2021

Edin Šunje, professor of Mechanical Engineering of Dzemal Bijedic University of Mostar (UNMO), applied to a mobility scholarship at ISEP, within an Erasmus ICM’s project. During his stay, Edin had the opportunity to work with the Mechanical Engineering Department and with the Research Centre in Mechanical Engineering (CIDEM).

«I intended to introduce myself with the host university curriculum, organization, laboratories and to exchange experiences. I was particularly interested in the fields of mechanical engineering, production engineering, industrial engineering, renewable energy sources. In addition to the above mentioned, I was interested in the models of cooperation of host university to the local industry and how industry express its needs to the university in a way of curriculum modification». Edin also wanted to present UNMO and encourage host staff and students to take future exchange programs and visit the university.

The professor shared the differences and similarities between the two institutions: «The most beautiful thing in engineering is the common language. During the presentation of study structure, especially at the Bachelor's level, we have found a high level of similarities between study structures at both universities, which proves the possibilities to teachers and students to take some future mobility exchange programs. I can see the similarity also is the cooperation with the industry. The difference I could see is the level of cooperation due to a more developed industry. Also, the number and the structure of laboratories at ISEP is higher than at our department.»

According to Edin, UNMO is a small, but very flexible university. «In general, the number of students is, approximately, 10 times lower than at ISEP which proves us the possibility to fully dedicate to student needs. The structure of courses is upgraded according to the market and industry requirements. On the other side, we try to include professionals from the industry in the teaching process, and our students are included in practices in the industry. All this is considered to be a formula for the required level of student knowledge and competencies.»

This was his first time in Porto and at ISEP. «The organization at ISEP is at a high level as it is at most EU universities. From the very beginning of my mobility application up to my last day, everything has been planned and well organized with a clear agenda. I want to point out the professionalism of all the professors I met.»

Edin Šunje finished his Master's and Ph.D. thesis on the injection molding process. Besides this area, he is also involved in renewable energy sources and many other processes that are taking place at his university department in cooperation with local companies. Edin is a member of two EU Capacity Building Project, where the institution is a partner with several EU universities.

The professor is working on two projects of his own: Knowledge triangle for a low carbon economy / KALCEA and INTERBA - INTERnationalization at Home.
