PETER JAMES
Professor of Environmental Management at the University of Bradford, and Co-Director of the Higher Education Environmental Performance Improvement (HEEPI) project. Peter James recently co-authored a review of the sustainable use of ICT within UK further and higher education for the UK education support body JISC, who are now funding follow on projects on greening scientific computing and videoconferencing. He also cofounded the world´s first NGO on ICT and sustainability, in 1998. Other recent work includes a review of innovation in environmental services for the UK Government; co-ordinating the EU Sustel (Sustainable Teleworking) project; and membership of the EU´s Expert Groups on Environmental Technology, and ICT and Energy Efficiency. Peter´s publications include Driving Eco-Innovation, The Green Bottom Line, and Sustainable Measures.

HEEPI supports environmental improvement in universities in specialist areas such as buildings, IT and laboratories through benchmarking, events, guidance, tools and other means. It also founded the Green Gown Awards, which highlight environmental best practice in universities in the UK and internationally.
HEEPI also manages the S-Lab (Safe, Successful, Sustainable Laboratories) initiative which works to improve the effectiveness and minimise resource consumption and related operating costs in UK university laboratories. It runs an annual laboratory awards scheme and conference and publishes many good practice cases and guidance documents.
