CISTER DISTINGUISHED SEMINAR SERIES: MARKO BERTOGNA

THE LIMITED PREEMPTION SCHEDULING MODEL
The question whether preemptive algorithms are better than non-preemptive ones for scheduling a set of real-time tasks has been debated for a long time in the research community. In fact, especially under fixed priority systems, each approach has advantages and disadvantages, and no one dominates the other when both predictability and efficiency have to be taken into account in the system design. Recently, limited preemption models have been proposed as a viable alternative between the two extreme cases of fully preemptive and non-preemptive scheduling. We present a brief survey of the existing approaches for reducing preemptions, providing both qualitative and quantitative performance evaluations.

Dr. Marko Bertogna, University of Modena, Italy
Marko Bertogna is (tenured) Assistant Professor at the University of Modena, Italy, since November 2011. Previously, he has been Assistant Professor at the Scuola Superiore Sant´Anna, Pisa, where he worked since 2003. He got a PhD in Computer Sciences in 2008 with a dissertation on Real-Time Systems for Multicore Platforms. He graduated magna cum laude in Telecommunication Engineering at the University of Bologna in 2002. In 2006 he visited the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, working with prof. Sanjoy Baruah on scheduling algorithms for single and multicore real-time systems. His research interests include scheduling and schedulability analysis of real-time multiprocessor systems, protocols for the exclusive access to shared resources, resource reservation algorithms and reconfigurable devices.
