Workshop - "The Human Side of Lean – The People side of Lean"

The early literature on Lean was dominated by the application of tools and techniques (for instance: Akao, 1991; Bicheno, 1991; Ishiwata, 1991; Harrison, 1992). This consequently led to some more detailed reviews of the people aspects of Lean such as respect for people (Liker, 2004; Emiliani and Stec, 2005) learning (Hines et al., 2004; Ballé et al., 2010), leadership (Spear, 2004; Emiliani, 2008) and behaviour (Hines et al., 2008; Mann, 2009). As Pete Gittens, former VP of HR in North America, notes “if there is magic to TPS, then this is it: successful implementation of human resource philosophies that create the buy in and engagement of the people necessary to run such a simple but intricate system (Liker and Hoseus, 2008, xxi)”.

In this workshop we will use the People Value Stream approach which reflects the Respect for People side of TPS, rather than the more commonly studied Continuous improvement approach. It uses the Value Stream concept but applied to the flow of people in the organisation. The theoretical approach is illustrated with the case of US firm OC Tanner, the closest organisation globally that we have found. Since 2000 they have achieved an exemplary culture, increased productivity by 800% and become a firm Toyota take visitors to. It is a prelude to the book People Value Stream which will be published in 2026.
