ICANN'07 - International Conference on Artificial Neural Networks

HOST

Host Profile

INEB - Instituto de Engenharia Biomédica is a private non-profit association with the statute of public interest involving the University of Porto. The aim of INEB is to provide an interface between academia and the entrepreneurial and health sectors. INEB employs about 80 researchers and has participations in several EU R&D projects (BREU, Brite Euram, ÉCLAIR, ESPRIT, BRPR, Leonardo da Vinci, Biomed, GROWTH). INEB has collaborations with many scientists and groups in Australia, China, Europe, Japan, South America, Japan and the US, resulting in exchanges and co-supervision of post-graduate students and joint publications in international journals. INEB is strongly involved in the Doctoral and Masters Programmes in Biomedical Engineering of the University of Porto.

The areas of activity of INEB are Biomedical Signal & Image and Biomaterials. INEB has two laboratories ¾ Signal Processing and Biomedical Imaging and Vision Computing ¾  hosted at the Engineering Faculty of the University of Porto, where applications of Artificial Neural Networks to automatic diagnostic of physiological signals and medical images are developed. Researchers of INEB's Signal & Image Laboratories are engineers, mathematicians and physicians.

Here are some of the R&D activities developed at INEB Signal & Image Laboratories:

• Automatic analysis of cardiotocograms
• Development of new types of entropy-based artificial neural networks
• Application of artificial neural networks to signal and image classification
• Application of modular co-operative neural networks to image analysis
• Application of artificial neural networks to fetal weight estimation
• Physiologic simulation fro medical training
• Fractal modelling of physiological signals
• Image movement analysis
• Computational techniques for visual perception of movement
• Detection and characterization of vascular networks
• Three-dimensional analysis of anatomical surfaces.

The Signal Processing laboratory of INEB has a team, NNIG, entirely dedicated to the research activity in Artificial Neural Networks. Its members organize the international Summer School on Neural Networks yearly held at Porto since 2002. This School has one-week duration and about 35 participants, many coming from all over the world.
